Will You Ever Forget

The
day we went into commission or the Farragut "Boots" that came
aboard.
The day we tried 'er out - or the days in Bremerton before we shoved off. The night we went out of the Sound and how sick we got. The day we arrived in Dago - hopeful, expectant and dumb. The days of our shakedown cruise with it G.Q.s, night firing and all. The time off Dago we went to G.Q. for a sub - good fishing them days. How we got hit by a fish - and the tales we told. The trip we almost took to Pearl - and the liberties we'd have. The trip back to Seattle - and the big things we would do. The ships dance - every one with a bag and a case of brew. Thanksgiving Day in 1943 - what a tired, homesick crew. The day we arrived in Pearl - just to begin a new cruise. The time we spent there - not wearin' our blues. The day we started out - all scuttlebutt was news. The days at Kwajalein - when we dropped the hook and fired. The natives at Majuro - and we got treated at sick bay for strained eyes. Then at Eniwetok - the island that didn't have any guns on it. The cruise across the line - the Shellbacks got the peppered gravy. The place called Espirito Santo - pretty but definitely no liberty. The trip with a tanker - nobody knew where in hell we was goin. The place we called home - definitely not home on the range. The night hunting barges - the woods were full of them. The time hunting a sub - and the oil slick for ten miles. The trip to Kapingamorangi - and the island that was on course 340 dg, speed 15. The firing practice on an island - no one said it wasn't friendly. Little Joe - the gentlemen with many buzzes. The hot nights at Purvis - and all hands slept topside. The trip to Eniwetok - the hopes of civilization. The nights and days with the convoy - and all for naught. The trip with the wagons - at least a chance to show what we could do. The 30 days at Guam - we showed what we could do. The Jap water tank - Them was close. The time the holiday was over - and everyone turned, too The time we separated the men from the boys - and everyone was a boy. The time we crossed the line again - our turn to show the Pollywogs how. The initiation - somehow the men got lost. The tavern in Espirito - Duffy's I think it was called. The time we had taking Palau - some island in the Pacific, I think. The time we anchored in Ulithi - no one knew what it meant then. The trip to a new place - well anyway in the Admiralty Group. The next trip we made - back home to Ulithi. The beer (recreation) parties on the island - Mog Mog I think. The day we missed breakfast - and dinner, too, the 25h of October to you and me. Those dyed splotches in the water - you prayed too. The trip thru the typhoon - . The cruise in the China Sea - an operation every 30 days. The time we said hello to Tokyo - and damn near froze. The time we took Iwo - and we held A.A. practice. The day and night with bogies - "I've waited so, no bogie today". The night we had a surface target - and rammed same. More beer on Mog Mog - and the nurses came. The day of 29 April - you'll never, never forget. Yep, we had a ticket - we took a cruise - we didn't know the ticket said Tokyo - but there are some things you can never forget. |
